Healthy Gums For Healthy Teeth
Healthy teeth need healthy gums for support and we do carefully check your gums for any signs of periodontal or gum disease at every appointment. If we find any indication that your gums are infected then our dentist will recommend periodontal therapy.
What is Periodontal Therapy?
Periodontal therapy may be as straightforward as a simple scale and polish for treating mild symptoms of gum disease, a condition called gingivitis. If your gum disease is more advanced, (a condition called periodontitis), then there are various ways it can be treated. A process called scaling and root planing will deep clean your gums, removing toxins, plaque bacteria and calculus (hardened plaque) so your gums can begin to recover from periodontal disease. If your gums are particularly badly infected then we can use topical antibiotics to help kill harmful bacteria. More advanced periodontal disease can be impossible to completely eradicate so treatment may be ongoing to help keep it under control.
Maintaining Healthy Gums
As well as periodontal therapy, it is essential to make sure you step up your oral care routine at home. This is because often periodontal disease is caused by poor oral hygiene. There is no need to worry as this will be very straightforward and you do not need special tools to keep your gums strong and healthy. We can give you personalised instructions on how to brush more effectively and how to floss.
